Terminal Alliance (Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse #1) by Jim C. Hines

Humanity has turned into zombie-like creatures. Luckily an alien race has been able to save some of the humans. The remnants of the human race work for that species as ruthless and feared mercenaries and at other important tasks, like sanitation. During a pretty standard military relief mission, all humans onboard Earth Mercenary Corps Ship Pufferfish turn into violent, feral monsters and the alien command staff is killed, but the cleaning crew of the ship survives by a chance. It is up to them to find out what is going on and stop the threat for humans and other species, too.

An entertaining comedic science fiction book. It took a while to find its feet. At the beginning the balance between funny and actual plot was a bit off with too much stupid banter, but when things really got going, a nice balance was found and the reading was really entertaining. The writing was smooth, with a nice warm undertone even when the events weren’t always so light.
