Anne Holt: Kasvoton tuomio (Frukta inte, Fear Not) Vik & Stubø #4

Norjalainen dekkari kirjasarjasta, josta ainakin pari kirjaa olen aikaisemmin lukenut. Suosittu naispiispa on puukotettu kuoliaaksi tämän ollessa jouluyönä kävelyllä. Piispan puoliso on syvästi järkyttynyt, mutta samalla hän vaikuttaa salaavan jotain poliisilta. Hän ei esimerkiksi suostu kertomaan, miksi piispa oli yöllä yksin liikkeellä. Samalla poliisille tuntuu kertyvän muitakin kuolemantapauksia; mm prostituoituna työskennellyt nuori siirtolaismies löytyy merestä kuolleena ja taideinstallaatioita tehnyt, läpimurron partaalla ollut taiteilija löytyy kuolleena mahdollisesti huumeiden yliannostuksen vuoksi. Tapauksien yhdistäväksi tekijäksi vaikuttaa nousevan homoseksuaalisuus - ainakin muiden kuin piispan murhan, se en tunnu oikein sopivan muihin kuolemiin.

Kirja oli hiukan hajanaisen tuntuinen ja henkilöiden runsaus vaikutti alussa vähän sekavalta – osittain vielä, kun eri juonilinjojen väliset yhteydet eivät alkupuolella olleet mitenkään selviä. Vähitellen asiat selkiytyvät ja kirja sai järkevän – ei tosin yhtään uskottavan päätöksen. Kielellisesti kirja oli vakaata keskitasoa. Ihan selkeimmät muistikuvat muista sarjan teoksista minulla ei ole, mutta tämä ei ehkä sarjan parhaasta päästä kyllä ollut.

A part of a Norwegian detective series. This time, a popular female bishop has been murdered. There have been other murders and the common theme for them seems to be homosexuality. The murder of the bishop doesn’t seem to fit the others, but her husband’s behavior seems a bit strange – he appears to be keeping something secret.  

At first the book was slightly confusing, with too many characters and plots which didn’t seem to have much in common. Slowly the different threads come together to a fairly satisfying – but not very believable – conclusion. This wasn’t one of the better ones in the series.

Jarkko Sipilä: Valepoliisi (Takamäki #13)

Seuraava Takamäki-sarjassa. Tällä kertaa kauppakeskuksen parkkipaikan lumikasasta löytyy teloitustyyliin tapettu ja ennen ampumista kidutettu mies. Melko läheltä löytyy toinen, henkihieveriin pahoinpidelty mies, joka ei halua sanallakaan keskustella poliisien kanssa pahoinpitelystään. Melko pian osoittautuu, että tapaukset liittyvät toisiinsa ja murhattu mies on amerikkalainen. Pian asiasta kiinnostuu myös suojelupoliisi ja myös tietyt jenkkien liittovaltion virastot. Kuka tuo kuollut mies oikein oli ja mitä hän oli tekemässä? Asiat eivät kovin hyvin suju ja Atari-mies, peitetehtävien konkari, Suhonen on taas kerran pahemmassa kuin pulassa ennen kuin asiat järjestyvät huolellisen poliisityön (ja hyvien vasikoiden) ansiosta.  

Kirjasarjan aika tavallista tasoa, ehkä kuitenkin kirja jäi hiukan keskitason alapuolelle. Tässä kirjassa oli taas ehkä hieman vähemmän henkilöihin perustuvaa juonta ja tarina oli pitkälti rikoksen selvittelyyn painottuvaa. Takamäellä sentään naisrintamalla oli vähän positiivista tapahtumassa aikaisemman tragedian sijasta. Joka tapauksessa kirja oli sujuvaa ja mukavaa autokuunneltavaa.

Another police procedural in the Takamäki-series. A dead man is found in a pile of snow in the parking lot of a shopping center. He has been tortured and killed execution style. Another heavily battered man is found on a quiet road nearby. He refuses to say anything about who was responsible. It turns out that the man killed was American and federal bureaus are highly interested in the case. Who was this man, and what was he doing in Finland?

Another smoothly written book where the crime is solved carefully by policemen's work (and using good informants), but it is below average for the series.

The Chase by Kristine Kathryn Rusch (Diving Universe #11)

The next part in the Diving Universe series. This book continues pretty directly from the last book. There are a lot of consequences that are examined from several viewpoints, from all sides of the multiparty conflict. The separate viewpoints are from The Boss and her friend, Captain Jonathan “Coop” Cooper, who has traveled from thousands of years in the past due to an accident involving an “Anacapa” drive which makes instantaneous travel in space possible (pretty dangerous, but mostly possible), from quasi “Star Fleet” - like an organization called the Fleet, from a Fleet splinter group and from a local empire with inspirations for expanse.

The viewpoints alternated and the characters pondered at length about their next actions. Eventually, there is a space fight and things almost reset to normal.

I was irritated by the attitude of “shoot first and ask questions later”. Wouldn’t the logical thing have been to open communications and find out what every party wants and needs? Also, it was a HUGE coincidence that all that was happening at the same time - there was no actual reason for that. Except from the point of view of the plot.

There were also some huge stupidities in the book. Apparently, dimming the lights in a spaceship is important to save energy. Apparently, faster than light space can’t spare a few hundred watts for lighting? It is also stated that the Empire supposedly had found “a lot” of abandoned dignity vessels. Weren’t they supposed to be a legend; in the first book the Boss hardly believes they even exist when she finds the first one. And now, apparently, there are a lot of them lying around.

The book was pretty slow. On the other hand, a fair amount of things happened, but the overall plot seems to move at a glacial pace. There was some fighting, a lot of plotting, and lots and lots of discussions. Perhaps they were not as excessive as in the former book (at least there were no pages wasted on childcare problems), but almost.

Rex Stout: Kadonnut ääni (Nero Wolfe #11, The Silent Speaker)

En ole varmaan muutamaan kymmeneen vuoteen lukenut Nero Wolfe -dekkareita. Puolittain sattumalta antikvariaattikäynnin yhteydessä tuli ostettua tämä. Nero Wolfehan on huomattavan ylipainoinen, ruuasta ja orkideoista pitävät yksityisetsivä, joka poistuu kotoaan vain ehdottoman pakon edessä. Hänen silminään ja jalkoinaan toimii Archie Goodwin, hiukan naisiin menevä, nuori etsivä ja samalla Wolfen henkilökohtainen sihteeri.  Tässä kirjassa he selvittelevät Hintaneuvoston johtajan murhaa. Hänen oli ollut tarkoitus pitää puhe yhdistyksen vastapuolen, ”Teollisuusneuvoston” kokouksessa.  Nämä kaksi ”neuvostoa” asettautuvat vastakkain ja niiden välit ovat hyytävät. Pääosa niiden työntekijöistä vaikuttavat olevan niin oman puolensa takana, kuin kyseessä olisi puolue tai uskonlahko. Tämä näiden osapuolten tausta ja merkitys jäi kirjassa enemmän kuin vähän epäselväksi ja vasta englanninkielisen Wikipedian kirjaa koskevan artikkelin lukeminen selvitti asiaa. Ehkä käännökset näille organisaatioille olisivat voineet olla selvempiä, pelkkä ”Hintaneuvosto” etenkään ei kerro oikeastaan yhtään mitään.  

Kirjan alkupuoli on hitaahko ja vähän ärsyttäväkin ja hiukan sekavan tuntuinen. Kun juoni pääsi kunnolla liikkeelle, kirjan vetävyys kohentui. Jonkin verran vanhahtavan vaikutelman se kyllä antoi kokonaisuutena, mutta vanha kirjahan on kyseessä. Kielellisesti kirja oli ihan hyvä, parempi kuin keskitason alapuolella olevat Agatha Christiet. Loppuratkaisu ei ollut mielestäni erityisen helposti pääteltävissä ja riippui vahvasti kadoksissa olleesta ”MacGuffinista”.  Ihan hupaisia hetkiä tämä hiukan humoristista kerrontaa tarjoava kirja antoi, mutta en ole varma kuinka pian seuraavaan sarjan kirjaan tulen tarttumaan. 

A Nero Wolfe mystery where the director of the Bureau of Price Regulation is killed when preparing for a speech at the meeting of the organization's archenemy, the National Industrial Association. (The names of the organizations were all pretty poorly translated and I didn’t really grasp the significance of those organizations while reading the book). After a few turns of the plot, Nero Wolfe naturally finds out who the murderer is. The first part of the book was a bit confusing, but the plot points came together fairly neatly even if the final part depended more on “Macguffin” and not on brilliant detective work. Altogether, a nice book that is written with a wry sense of humor. However, I am not sure if I will pick other books in the series in the near future.

Sari Rainio , Juha Rautaheimo: (Mortuí non silent #2) Vaeltavat vainajat

Seuraava osa Sari Rainion ja Juha Rautaheimon dekkarisarjassa Helsingin murharyhmän tutkimuksista. Tällä kertaa rikos on kohtuullisen tavanomaisen tuntuinen aluksi: asuntovaunussa vuosia asustellut yksinäinen laitapuolen kulkija on puukotettu kuolleeksi. Yllätys tulee, kun hänen henkilöllisyyttään aletaan selvittämään. Mies on kuollut jo kymmenen vuotta sitten - tai ainakin hänet on julistettu kuolleeksi tuolloin, hänen kadottuaan vuosia aikaisemmin. Mies vielä osoittautuu murharyhmän päällikön Ville Karilan lapsuuden ystäväksi. Hänen epäiltiin sytyttäneen Karilan kotitalossa syttyneen tulipalon, jossa kuoli yhden perheen äiti. Kun poliisilla ei vahvojen epäilyjen tueksi löytynyt todisteita, mies - tai tuolloin vielä lähinnä nuorukainen – katosi, eikä häntä sen jälkeen kukaan nähnyt, ennen kuin nyt. Voisiko tällä vanhalla jutulla olla jokin yhteys nykyaikaan? Ville Karila pääsee kuulustelujen yhteydessä tapaamaan useamman lapsuuden tuttunsa, myös Talon Kauneimman Tytön, johon oli ainakin aikoinaan ollut palavasti rakastunut. Samalla oikeuslääkäri Viola Kaario yrittää saada kiipeliin viime kirjassa ilman rangaistusta selvinneen auervaaran. 

Kirja ei ehkä ollut aivan hyvä kuin edellinen osa. Se sisälsi hyvin leppoisaa, hitaahkosti etenevää ja mukavaa kerrontaa, mutta se oli ehkä jo hiukan liian leppoisaa ja hidasta. Viola Kaario oli myös liian vähäisessä roolissa, hän on kuitenkin sarjan mielenkiintoisimpia hahmoja ja jäi nyt lähinnä sivurooliin. Jotenkin kielellisestikin kirja tuntui edellistä heikommalta – ehkä etenkin tekstin ”jäntevyys” oli heikompaa ja juonen kuljetus ei ollut yhtä sujuvaa. Mukavaa kuunneltavaa kirja kuitenkin oli automatkoilla, ja juoneen mahtui monta kiemuraa.

Elizabeth Strout: Olive, taas

Seuraava osa Olive Kitteridgen tarinassa. Aikaa on kulunut edellisestä kirjasta. Olive on leski, mutta hän on tavannut uuden miehen, jonka kanssa hän lopulta menee naimisiin. Ja jää sitten kirjan kuluessa leskeksi uudelleen.  Kirja on nytkin novellikokoelmaksi luokiteltava, joka kertoo sekä Olivesta, että kaupungin muista asukkaista - yleensä Olivea ainakin hiukan sivuten. Mielestäni novellien tasossa oli enemmän vaihtelua kuin ensimmäisessä osassa, pari tarinaa tuntui vähän turhilta ja tylsiltäkin, mutta vastapainona oli monta todella hyvää kertomusta. Oliven persoonallisuus kehittyi kirjan ja ikääntymisen myötä, vaikka vanhentumisen hyväksyminen ajoittain hänelle raskasta olikin.

Kielellisesti hienoa, pettävän helppolukuista, mutta samalla monitasoista kerrontaa kuten Stroutin muissakin lukemissani kirjoissa. Kirja todennäköisesti hyötyisi uudesta lukukerrasta, jolloin vasta kunnolla ymmärtäisi tarinoiden taustan ja ne asiat, joita ei suoraan sanota. Se ei ole kuitenkaan suosikkejani Stroutilta, mutta joka tapauksessa erittäin hyvä kirja.

  

More stories about Olive Kitterridge. She loses her husband, remarries, and eventually loses her second husband too. And she gets old, which isn’t always easy. The book contains separate short stories. Their quality was a bit more varied than in the first part, and there were a few stories which were slightly disappointing. As a whole, the book was very good, but perhaps not on a par with the other books by the same author. However, the author’s writing was deceptively simple as always, and very enjoyable.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Marra, a princess of a small kingdom, is living at a nunnery. For political reasons, her big sister has been married off to a prince of a militarily strong neighboring kingdom, but she dies in an accident soon after. Her next sister has quickly been married to the same prince. When that sister's first child has a christening, Marra is invited. It turns out that life as a queen isn’t very nice when your husband is an abusive brute. The christening goes fairly well, but a fairy godmother who blesses the child is pretty scary with an unusual blessing. Marra returns to the nunnery, but as she hears that her sister is pregnant again (and her husband is now the king), she decides to do something. She seeks help from a powerful grave witch, an old woman who can talk to the dead. She sets Marra tasks that are meant to be impossible, but Marra finishes them and, while doing them, creates a living skeleton of a dog. Together, Marra and the dog start their journey to save Marra’s sister, but at first, they seek out Marra’s fairy godmother, who initially seems to be quite a letdown - apparently, the only enhancement she is easily capable to grant is “good health.” Together, the three take a short side trip to the fairy market and free a former warrior who has been imprisoned there. Now they face just a small task: to save Marra’s sister - and perhaps to get rid of the brute of a king. 

The story is told in amusing, fairytale-like language with a strong undertone of wry humor. All the characters are funny and delightful in their own way with slightly different sorts of humor. The book is very enjoyable, fun, and even exciting - how that bunch of unlikely people could possibly defeat a closely guarded king of a powerful nation. But looks can be deceptive - they all have something more that can't be seen at first glance. The book did have a slight YA feel, but that didn’t harm it at all.
