Seppo Jokinen: Sen maksaa minkä tilaa (Koskinen #28)

Uusin komisario Koskinen. Koskisella on nyt monta juttua selvitettävänä. Näsijärveltä lumen sulaessa jäiden päältä järveltä löytyi kuollut mies vain bokserit päällä. Melkein samaan aikaan melko tavanomaisen liikennepysäytyksen yhteydessä auton peräkontista löytyi kuollut alusvaatteisillaan oleva nainen. Näiden juttujen lisäksi Koskinen itse iltalenkillään Hervannan metsissä kuuli kaksi laukauksen ääntä ja tuskan kiljuntaa. Ruumista ei kuitenkaan alueelta löydy.  Lisäksi vanha armeijakaveri, eläkkeellä oleva menestynyt autokauppias, pyytää Koskisen apua, koska kaverin isä oli kuolinvuoteellaan tunnustanut tappaneensa liikekumppaninsa kymmeniä vuosia sitten ja olevansa aviottoman tytön isä. Kunniallisena miehenä mies on sitä mieltä, että tämä yllätyssisko pitää huomioida perinnönjaossa, mutta missä tämä on? Miehen kolme poikaa, joilla on jokaisella kovin rahoitusvajeinen autoliike, eivät ole uudesta perijästä ollenkaan innostuneet, mutta lisäksi heillä vaikuttaa olevan keskenään muutakin riitaa. Minkä vuoksi aikaisemmin hyvin keskenään toimeen tulleet veljet joutuvat nyrkkitappeluun keskenään? Kaikki tietysti ratkeaa loppua kohden, tosin melkoisia yhteensattumia juonien lopullisessa yhteen punoutumisessa on.

Nämä monet päällekkäiset juonet aiheuttavat hiukan hajanaisuutta kirjaan - samoin Koskisen ihmissuhteet ovat tässä vaiheessa hiukan kummallisia ja myös hajanaisia - Ullan kanssa yhteisasuminen loppui, mutta kuitenkin jonkinnäköistä romanttista suhdetta heillä tuntuu olevan menossa ainakin, kun keskusteluissa on ajoittain lepertelysävyjä. Mutta vanhakin suola janottaa melkoisesti. Ihan vetävää ja viihdyttävää luettavaa, mutta se ei ole sarjansa kärkipäätä.   

The latest Inspector Koskinen book from the police procedural series that happens at Tampere. Koskinen is very busy as there are several cases going on: a man wearing only underwear is found in the middle of the lake when the snow over the ice has melted. Another near-naked body is found during a pretty routine traffic stop after a small-time criminal tries to escape the police - this time a female one. And his old army buddy asks for a favor: his father confessed a murder on his deathbed and said that he has another child, a girl he hasn’t been in contact with, and she should get her share of the considerable estate. Could Koskinen find out where that person lives at the moment? And his private life is in a strange state: is he still in a relationship with his colleague even if she has moved away? He is also having warmer and warmer feelings towards his former, divorced wife. Maybe they might have a new chance?

About average for its series – there were a few too many plot lines going on at the same time and that made the book feel slightly disconnected. The resolution and plot were also fairly heavily dependent on coincidences. But a nice simple book to read while recovering from my second corona infection.

Replay by Ken Grimwood

A 43-year-old man dies from a sudden heart attack. He wakes up at his dorm apartment as an 18-year-old version of himself. After adjusting for a few days he decides to make the best of it and acquires a fortune through sports betting and stock markets. As the owner of this giant fortune, he tries to keep himself in top shape but dies again at the same age. The cycle repeats. He wakes after death at a young age and he lives his life with different choices. He must abandon loved ones, and in one life he has a daughter, and after that he decides never to get another child as he has not only lost his daughter but she was never even born. In the next iteration he keeps his college girlfriend and only acquires a modest fortune, and he lives a pretty happy life. Next time, he is disillusioned with all that. He spends a few years partying heavily and having wild sex, until he buys an isolated farm and lives practically as a hermit. Then he hears about a new, very popular movie with rave reviews that he hasn’t heard of or watched during his earlier lives. There is only one reason why that could happen: there is someone else who is repeating lives and that person has created something really new. He finds out that there is a woman who has been experiencing similar repeats to himself. Later, they get together. But for both, the moment of rebirth is happening later and later... will there be a time when they won't be reborn again?

A very good and interesting book, with pretty logical life choices for the couple going through their repeated lives. The characters were well-described and felt real, and were people that you could care about. Apparently, there was supposed to be a sequel for this book. Alas, the author has died, so that won’t happen. There was at least one hook for the sequel: when they were trying to find other repeaters by posting advertisements about future events to major magazines, they got a letter from Australia that contained only the words ”not yet, wait”, or something to that effect. That would most likely have been something the sequel would have examined.

Antti Tuomainen: Mies joka kuoli

Sienifirman toimitusjohtaja saa lääkäriltään huonoja uutisia. Hän on kuollut mies. Tai ainakin tulee olemaan; hänet on myrkytetty jonkinlaisella kasvimyrkyllä, johon ei ole vasta-aineita ja jonka vaikutusta ei voida estää. Kuolema on vääjäämätön, sen ajankohta on auki, mutta kaukana se ei ole. Uutisen jälkeen hän palaa kotiin normaalia aikaisemmin, ja siellä odottaa lisää huonoja uutisia, hänen vaimonsa harrastaa talon terassilla rajua seksiä firman työntekijän kanssa. Vähemmästäkin mies hiukan hätkähtää. Hän poistuu paikalta ilman, että seksittelijät huomaavat häntä. Hän alkaa miettiä kuka hänet on tappanut. Vaimoko? Motiivi näköjään ainakin on. Vai kilpailevan, hiukan hämäräperäisen firman, vielä hämärämmät työtekijät. Nämä ainakin vaikuttavat pikkuisen aggressiivisilta ad samuraimiekkojen heiluttaminen, tosin sellaisessa toiminnassa on riskejä myös miekan heiluttajalle. Vai onko syyllinen joku muu? 

Kirja on kevyttä sekoilua, jossa sienibisnes kuumentuu hiukan liikaakin. Uskottavuutta kirjalle ei juuri ole ja juonen koukerot menevät kovin samankaltaisia latuja kuin kirjailijan muissakin kirjoissa. Jos tämä olisi ollut ensimmäinen häneltä lukemani, niin olisin varmasti pitänyt enemmän - nyt vaikutelma jäi aika keskinkertaiselle tasolle. Loppuratkaisukin oli pikkuisen lässähdys, eikä ehkä ollut kaikkein loogisin millään tasolla. 

The owner of a company that specializes in selling wild mushrooms, especially to Japan, gets bad news from his doctor. He is already dead – or at least will very soon be. He has been poisoned with an unknown slow-working poison, and there is no antidote. When he goes home, he is very shaken, and he finds that his wife is having sex with his employee. He is even more shocked and manages to get away unseen. What to do? Who has killed him? The wife and her lover are obvious choices, but he really can’t believe his wife would do something like that. However, he did not believe that she might be unfaithful, either. Or might the new competitor who apparently comes from nowhere to sell mushrooms be behind the murder? Some of its personnel seem to be extremely aggressive. So a pretty absurd but mostly entertaining chase between death and finding who caused it begins. The book is fairly similar in many ways to other works by the same author. The ending was the weakest part – it really didn’t seem to make much sense.

Jens Andersen: LEGO Kuinka tanskalaissuku valloitti maailman (The LEGO Story: How a Little Toy Sparked the World's Imagination )

Tarina Lego-yrityksestä sen alkuvaiheista nykyaikaan asti; siitä kuinka se kasvoi pikkuruisesta ja pahasti velkaisesti puuleluja valmistavasta yrityksestä maailmaan laajuiseksi miljardeja vuodessa tuottavaksi – edelleen yhden perheen omistamaksi – jättiyritykseksi. Alkuvaiheessa yrityksellä oli ongelmia, tehdastilat paloivat muutaman kertaan ja rahaa laajennuksiin ja uusiin laitteisiin piti hankkia kaikin mahdollisin keinoin. Etenkin alkuvaiheessa firman tausta oli yllättävän aattellis-uskonnollinen, mutta nähtävästi pikkupaikkakunta, jossa firma syntyi, oli tanskalaisen herätysliikkeen ydinaluetta.  Tämä alkuosa kirjaa, joka kertoi yrityksen varhaisvaiheista, oli kiinnostavin osa. Lopussa tuntui kertomus menevän hiukan nimivyörytykseksi – kuka milloinkin oli toimitusjohtajana ja keitä oli missäkin vastuutehtävässä työssä. Myös yrityksen linjanmuutokset ohittuivat jotenkin vain aina uuden ”sloganin” valintana – sitä mitä mikäkin johtamisen ja toiminnanmuutos ihan realistisesti, käytännössä tarkoitti ja miten yrityksen toiminta oikeasti muuttui, jäi mielestäni hiukan auki. Kaiken kaikkia kiinnostava kirja yrityksestä, joka on tehnyt omistajaperheestään multimiljardöörejä. 

The story of The Lego Group and the family that founded it and is still the sole owner of the multibillion corporation. The earliest parts covering a tiny factory making high-quality wooden toys were the most interesting parts. The early years were not easy as the factory burned down a few times and was heavily in dept. But through perseverance and sometimes with single-minded conviction, the brand started to grow and grow. The latter part of the book was a bit less interesting as it seemed at times to consist mostly of the names of those who are currently in charge of operations. There were some changes in direction the company took over the years, but those felt more like they were changing the current slogan. I would liked to have known what really and concretely changed. As a whole, it was interesting and a bit different from books I usually read.

Terry Pratchett , Neil Gaiman: Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Armageddon is coming. The representatives of Heaven and Hell should be preparing and getting their troops ready for the final battle. However, as they have lived on Earth for thousands of years, they have gotten pretty used to living on Earth and have become more or less friends. They are also used to taking care of each others' duties. Neither of them is very keen on making great changes to their arraignment. But the forces of evil are moving, and the antichrist will be born… not exactly to the family he was supposed to be born into, but rather into a very ordinary family that will provide him with a very ordinary education and he has a few very good friends. So the plan isn’t going in the right direction. 

A fun, ironic book filled with humorous observations, fun episodes, and interesting characters. I was pretty surprised (and a little disappointed - I hoped there would be MORE things in the book) at how very, very close the TV adaptation was. Enjoyable reading where the plot wasn’t the main thing, the way things happen was.

Agatha Christie: Simeon Leen testamentti (Hercule Poirot's Christmas)

Agathan Christien Hercule Poirot kirja. Kirja on erittäin tyypillinen lajityyppinsä edustaja. Suvun isä, erikoinen, hiukan äkkipikainen, mutta erittäin rikas mies, on kutsunut lapsensa viettämään joulua kanssaan. Osan kanssa hän ei ole ollut vuosiin yhteydessä, eikä veljeksien keskinäiset välit ole erityisen hyviä. Mukaan on kutsuttu myös kuolleen siskon tytär, jota kukaan suvusta ei tunne ja joka osoittautuu olevan varsinainen villikko kaunotar. Suvun patriarkka ilmoittaa jouluaattoiltana muuttavansa testamenttinsa heti joulun jälkeen. Pian tämän jälkeen hän löytyy kuolleena, kurkku auki viillettynä. Kuka on syyllinen? Hercule Poirot, joka sattumalta on paikkakunnalla, selvittää luonnollisesti mysteerin kirjan lopussa tilanteessa, jossa ovat kaikki mahdolliset syylliset kokoontuneena. Erittäin perus”kliseinen” kirja, tosin taitaa osa niistä kliseistä olla lähtöisin tästä ja muista Christien kirjoista. Loppu oli ehkä hiukan teennäinen ja syyllisen motiivi oli kaukaa haettu, myös murhan tekotapa oli äärimmäisen epätodennäköinen. Muutenkin ihmisten toiminta ja käyttäytyminen eivät ihan kaikki uskottavimpia olleet – mutta kulttuuri- ja etenkin aikaerot, onhan tämä yli 80 vuotta vanha kirja, selittänevät tästä merkittävän osan. 

A very archetypical Hercule Poirot book. A rich, cantankerous man has invited his sons (and a deceased daughter’s daughter - who no one has seen before). One of the sons has been years away after clashes between relatives, others feel that the monthly allowance they get from their father is too low. On Christmas Eve the old man announces that he will change his will. Soon after that he is found brutally murdered. Who did it? That is something Hercule Poirot must find out. Of course, he will. The book was entertaining, but the solution to the mystery was very contrived. The characters' behavior was also bizarre, sometimes extremely childish, and hard to understand, but that is probably partly due to different times and cultures.

Antti Tuomainen: Pikku Siperia

Pohjois-suomalaiseen pikkukaupunkiin on pudonnut meteori. Sitä säilytetään kaupungin pikkumuseon vitriinissä ennen sen toimittamista etelään tutkimuksia varten. Museota on värväytynyt vartioimaan joukko miehiä, tärkeimpänä ehkä kaupungin pappi. Tämä on juuri saanut puolisoltaan järisyttäviä uutisia, puoliso on raskaana. Asiassa on sellainen hieman ikävämpi piirre, että pappi ei YK-joukoissa tapahtuneen vamman vuoksi voi saada lapsia. Tämä motivoi pappia viettämään runsaasti aikaa vartiotehtävissä. Eräänä yönä museoon tehdään murto, mukana on ilmeisesti kaksi yrittäjää. Onneksi meteori varkaat epäonnistuvat on varastavat museossa vitriinissä olleen käsikranaatin, jonka deaktivaatio lopulta osoittautui hiukan huonosti tehdyksi. Kuka yrittää varastaa arvokkaaksi arvellun meteoriitin? Kenen kanssa papin puoliso on häntä pettänyt? Pian vaikuttaa siltä, että osapuilleen koko kylä asujaimisto on jompaankumpaan tai ehkä jopa molempiin tekoihin saattanut syyllistyä. 

Kirja on sujuvaa lakonisen humoristista tekstiä - erittäin samantapaista sekä tyyliltään (että juonen piirteiltään) kuin saman kirjoittajan muut lukemani teokset. Useampia isoja typeryyksiä kirjassa on: Miksi ihmeessä muutama kilon kivenmötikkää ei mitenkään olisi voitu kuljettaa etelään tutkittavaksi vaikka jo heti seuraavana päivänä - helpostihan se vaikka laukkuun olisi sopinut. Ja varastetun kiven arvo olisi myös ollut erittäin kyseenalainen - meteorin arvosta merkittävä osa on sen prominenssia - tiedetään mikä se on ja missä se on pudonnut, tiedetään sen kemiallinen koostumus jne. Varsin vaikeaa olisi ollut jotain varastettua mötikkää etenkään osissa kaupitella keräilijöille. 

A meteor falls in a small village in Northern Finland. For some strange and unknown reason, it isn’t sent for examination to the south but is kept in a museum under close watch waiting for the "special" transportation. One of the men monitoring it is a local parishioner who just heard big news from his wife: she is pregnant. Except that he is infertile and hasn’t told his wife. He spends even more time guarding the meteorite just to stay away from home. There is a burglary attempt, but the clueless thief steals a hand grenade, which is a museum piece, a military antique to be precise. It turns out that no one had deactivated it and the thief's health took a turn for the worse. He had someone helping him, but who? And who is the father of the child the parishioner's wife is carrying? It turns out that most of the village's inhabitants are suspected to be at least one of those things if not both. If you do have many enemies, are you paranoid if you think that you have many enemies? A pretty fun and dryly entertaining book, but the author’s works all seem similar in their plots and characters.

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

The second part of the Stormlight Archive.

After a long setup in the first part, the story really starts to move. It is pretty hard (and I believe pretty pointless) to describe the plot in any detail as it took a long time to get there and this book again contains well over a thousand pages. Any plot descriptions easily contained hundreds of words and were just a brief glance at the whole and many plot lines in the book – which mostly meet up by the end of the book.

Anyway, the main characters finally are brought together and start fully realizing their powers. Also, their whole world is apparently facing a turning point. The Voidbringers, the enemy which was thought to be a fairy tale, have come back. But the Knights Radiants who opposed them also returned. And many of the main characters turn out to be Knights.

One of the most interesting characters is Lift, a very young thief who apparently has special powers and starred in one of the “Interludes” story fragments aside from the main parts of the book. The flashback scenes about Shallan were also very good and told where that character really came from. There is a resurrection of a character I was 100% sure wasn’t dead.  And already in the first book, I suspected that there was something more in the “battle thrill” which tended to portray the soldier as just an ordinary battle lust. There were a few hints in that direction in this book also. 

The writing was at the same level as before. The humor was nice, but not too sophisticated. The next book will probably be a bit different; the setting at least will be wildly different.
