Arttu Tuominen: Hyvitys (Delta #2)

Seuraava osa Poriin sijoittuvassa dekkarisarjassa. Tällä kertaa kerronnan pääpiste sijoittuu toiseen murharyhmän poliiseista, Henrik Oksmaniin, kun edellisessä kirjassa pääpaino oli ryhmän johtajassa ja hänen lapsuutensa traumoissa. Jo viime kirjassa annettiin ymmärtää, että Henrik Oksmanilla on jossain määrin pakko-oireiseen häiriöön sopivia käyttäytymispiirteitä. Nyt niiden taustan syyt selviävät paremmin. Hänen isänsä on ollut kontrolloiva ja vahvasti uskonnollinen, pitäen sekä poikansa että puolisonsa tiukassa kurissa. Se, että poika osoittautui olevan homoseksuaali, jolla on transvestiittisia taipumuksia, ei asiaa liiemmin helpottanut.

Porissa olleeseen homojen suosimaan yökerhoon tehdään pommi-isku, jossa kuolee useita henkilöitä ja vammautuu vielä enemmän. Henrik Oksman oli ollut klubilla vain hetkeä ennen räjähdystä, ja poistunut sieltä jääden valvontakameroiden kuviin kauniissa punaisessa mekoissa miehen käsipuolessa. Tunnistetaanko hänet? Kertooko hän muille tapausta tutkiville poliiseille, että oli paikalla vain hetkeä ennen terrori-iskua? Silloin hänen salaisuutensa paljastuisi. Iskun tehnyt mies julkaisee videon, jossa hän usuttaa samanmielisiä vainoon sukupuolivähemmistöjä vastaan. Skinit ja vastaavat tuntuvat tätä kutsua myös noudattavan. Se, mikä videolla oli pahinta, oli siinä näkyvät vielä käyttämättömät kranaatit ja ase. Valmius on siis uusiin iskuihin olemassa, mutta onko sellainen tapahtumassa ja jos on, niin minne?

Hyvä ja jännittävä kertomus, jossa tutustutaan tarkemmin Henrik Oksmaniin ja siihen, miksi hän on sellainen kuin on. Hänellä on myös yllättäen mahdollisuus samaistua kirjan pahikseen - siinä määrin samankaltaisuuksia heidän menneisyydessään ja isäsuhteissaan on. Kirja oli ehkä hiukan parempi ja sujuvammin kirjoitettu kuin sarjan ensimmäinen osa. Muutamia kummallisuuksia

kirjassa oli, ilmeisesti "riittävän vahvalla linkkiantennilla" pystyy yhdistämään internetiin ilman mitään palveluntarjoajaa? WTF? Mites tuo muka onnistuisi? Jonnekinhan se yhteys pitää ottaa? Muutenkin pahiksen taidot ylittivät vähän uskottavuuden rajan - ja mihin ihmeeseen tämä tarvitsee kuvatun kaltaisen tietokonepalvelinfarmin?

The next part of the detective series set in Pori. This time, the narrative focuses on another detective in the murder squad, Henrik Oksman, whereas in the previous book, the emphasis was on the team leader and his childhood traumas. In the last book, it was hinted that Henrik Oksman exhibits behavioral traits consistent with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Now, the reasons behind these traits become clearer. His father had been controlling and strongly religious, keeping both his son and spouse under strict control. The fact that the son turned out to be homosexual with transvestite tendencies didn't make things any easier.

A bomb attack occurs in a nightclub popular among the gay community in Pori, resulting in several deaths and even more injuries. Henrik Oksman, who had been at the club just moments before the explosion, was captured on surveillance cameras leaving, wearing a beautiful red dress and with a man on his arm. Will he be identified? Will he tell the other detectives investigating the case that he was there just moments before the terrorist attack? In which case, his secret would be revealed. The man behind the attack releases a video, encouraging like-minded individuals to persecute sexual minorities. Skinheads and similar groups seem to be following this call as well. What was most alarming in the video was the sight of unused grenades and a weapon. The readiness for new attacks exists, but is one imminent, and if so, where?

A gripping and thrilling story delving deeper into Henrik Oksman and the reasons behind his nature. Surprisingly, he also has the opportunity to identify with the antagonist of the book – to the extent that similarities in their pasts and father-son relationships are evident. The book was perhaps a bit better and more smoothly written than the first part of the series. There were a few oddities in the book; apparently, with a "sufficiently strong link antenna," one can connect to the internet without any service provider. WTF? How could that be possible? In any case, the villain's skills exceeded the credibility limit a bit – and what on earth does he need a computer server farm like the one described for?

 

Agatha Christie: Roger Ackroydin murha (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd) Hercule Poirot #4

 Agatha Christien kirja, joka on hänen teoksistaan maineeltaan parhaasta päästä, ja joka on ilmeisesti ainoa kirjailijan teoksena ”1001 kirjaa, jotka on luettava ennen kuolemaa” -listalla. Kovin tarkkaan juonta ei voi spoilaamatta kuvailla, mutta Roger Ackroyd, paikallinen rikas liikkeenomistaja on kuollut ja Hercule Poirot selvittää kuka on syyllinen. Apulaisenaan hänellä on paikallinen maalaislääkäri, joka kertoo tapahtumista minämuotoisena kerrontana, ja jolle Poirotin tutkimuksien eteneminen on pääosin ihmettelyä tuottavaa. Luonnollisesti murhaaja paljastuu kaikkien epäiltyjen yhteisessä tapaamisessa vanhaan kunnon dekkarityyliin. Itse arvasin yllätysmurhaajan aivan kirjan alkuvaiheessa, tieto siitä, että murhaan henkilöllisyys on suuri yllätys, riitti suuntaamaan epäilyt tiettyyn suuntaan, eikä sitten tarvinnut muuta kuin bongailla kirjailijan pikkuvihjeitä, siitä kuka murhaaja osoittautui olemaan. Ihan hyvä ja vetävä kirja tästä huolimatta.

Agatha Christie's book, which is among her most renowned works and is apparently the only one by the author listed in '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.' The plot cannot be described in too much detail without spoilers, but Roger Ackroyd, a wealthy local business owner, has died, and Hercule Poirot investigates who is the culprit. Assisting him is a local country doctor who narrates the events in the first person and for whom the progress of Poirot's investigations is mainly a source of wonder. Naturally, the murderer is revealed in a meeting of all the suspects in the classic detective style. I guessed the surprise murderer very early in the book; the information that the identity of the murderer is a significant surprise was enough to direct suspicions in a certain direction. Then all that was needed was to spot the author's subtle hints about who the murderer turned out to be. Overall, it is a good and engaging book nonetheless.

Markku Envall: Samurai nukkuu

”Aforismi on laukaus. Tyhjä tila sen edellä ja jälkeen on sen hiljaisuuden kuva,

joka sen on räjähdettävä ympärilleen.

Mutta lentää siinä tyhjyydessä rapaakin, viheltää sirpaleita siinä hiljaisuudessa.”

Olen lukenut Finlandia-palkinnon voittajia aika järjestelmällisesti. Kun tämä kirja sattui antikvariaatissa eteen, poimin sen luonnollisesti talteen. Aforismikokoelma ei käsitteenä tuntunut erityisen houkuttelevalta ja kirja odotti aika pitkään hyllyssä, ennen kun puolisattumalta siihen tartuin. Sehän oli sitten melkoinen yllätys. Osittain se sisälsi jopa lyhyitä kerronnallisia elementtejä, esimerkiksi kirjan alussa käytiin luomiskertomus läpi humanistisesta näkökulmasta, osittain se oli runollinen, ja toisaalta käytännössä ihan jokaisen lauseen voi erottaa kokonaisuudesta omana aforisminaan. Kirja humoristisuus myös yllätti yhdistyneenä lämpimään inhimillisyyteen.

Kielellisesti teksti oli hiottua ja varmasti kirjoittaessa todella paljon pohdiskelua ja ajattelua vaatinutta ja oivaltavaa.

”Todistaa etuaan vastaan on ylellisyyttä, johon sotilaalla, kauppiaalla, poliitikolla ei ole varaa,

sanoa todeksi sitä, minkä tietää vievän tappioon, köyhyyteen, unohdukseen,

sanoa kolme kaunista, itsensä kumoavaa lausetta: ”pelkään”, ”olen ujo”, ”en tiedä”.”

Kirjana tämä oli hieno, enkä yhtään ihmettele, että voitti palkinnon vuoden parhaasta kirjasta – aikana kun tämän tyyppisen kirjan voitto (onnistuisikohan edes julkaiseminen nykyään?) oli mahdollista. Kyseessä oli nauttien hitaasti muutama sivu kerrallaan luettava teos, johon varmasti pitää vielä myöhemmin palata uudelleen.

Ei. Hän ei voi vaihtaa edes sitä pilkun paikkaa, jota harkitsin kolme päivää.”

Harvoin kirjasta olen ollut näin positiivisesti yllättynyt. 

Minna Lindgren: Minun oopperani: Epätäydellinen historia

Käsikirja oopperan maailman esitettynä aikajärjestyksessä huippuhetkiin keskittyen. Kirjassa vuorottelevat oopperoiden ja säveltäjien taustasta kertovat jaksot sekä humoristiseen sävyyn esitetyt oopperoiden juonikuvaukset. Teksti oli vetävää ja mielenkiintoista, tosin ei useampaa oopperakuvausta yhdellä kertaa jaksanut lukea. Pädi avoinna kirjan vieressä oli olennaisen tärkeä, jolloin pystyi heti kuuntelemaan tekstissä mainituista erityisen hienoista aarioista pätkän, saaden paremman käsityksen siitä mistä tekstissä oli kyse. Kyseessä oli varsin kiinnostava kirja, jota pitää myöhemmin kyllä selailla aina ennen kun jotain esiteltyä oopperaa menee katsomaan, jolloin voi sitten bongailla musiikissa olevia pieniä säveltäjän käyttämiä jippoiluja, joita tuntuu olevan eriasteisena vähän jokaisessa oopperassa. Kokonaisuutena kiinnostava ja viihdyttävä kirja. 

Handbook of the opera world presented in chronological order, focusing on highlights. The book alternates between episodes detailing the backgrounds of operas and composers, along with plot descriptions presented in a humorous tone. The text was engaging and interesting, although reading multiple opera descriptions at once was a bit challenging. Having a tablet open next to the book was crucial, allowing immediate listening to excerpts of the particularly exquisite arias mentioned in the text, providing a better understanding of the context. It was a quite fascinating book that I will definitely browse through before attending any of the operas discussed, enabling me to spot the subtle tricks used by composers in the music, which seem to be present to varying degrees in almost every opera. Overall, it was an interesting and entertaining book.

Antto Terras: Stockmann Yard: Myymäläetsivän muistelmat

Stockmannin myymäläetsivän muistelmia. Periaatteessa kyseessä on kiinnostava aihe, ja kirja sisältääkin joitain kohtalaisen mielenkiintoisia anekdootteja, mutta kirjan kirjoitustyyli ja tekstin sävy ovat kuitenkin varsin vastenmielisiä. Kirja on ”kirjoitettu” (lyön vaikka mitä vetoa, että kirjoittaminen on tapahtunut sanelemalla) puhekielentyyppisellä aika huonolla kielellä, jossa suhtaudutaan halveksivasti vähän kaikkeen, myös kirjoittajan työantajaan ja etenkin Stockmannin asiakkaisiin. Teksti on täynnä teini-ikäisiä muka hauskuuksia ja kirjoittajasta tulee erittäin ylimielisen, mutta samalla aika vastenmielisen henkilön vaikutelma.  Kirjan jaksoi lukea, mutta jonkinasteinen ärtyminen oli kyllä lukiessa koko ajan päällä.  

The memoirs of a Stockmann store detective. In principle, it is an interesting subject, and the book does contain some moderately intriguing anecdotes. However, the writing style and tone of the text are quite unpleasant. The book is "written" (I would bet anything that it was dictated) in a colloquial and rather poor language, displaying a contemptuous attitude towards almost everything, including the author's employer and especially Stockmann's customers. The text is filled with adolescent attempts at humor, creating an impression of an extremely arrogant and, at the same time, quite a repulsive person. I managed to read the book, but a certain level of irritation was present throughout the entire reading experience.

Adrian Tchaikovsky: Children of Time (Children of Time #1)

 

An almost classic that I hadn’t read yet. Humans have spread to other planets. There is a terraforming project in the works; a group of scientists had planned to seed the planet with chimpanzees and then spread a virus that would uplift the apes but, unfortunately, a civil war starts when anti-science groups destroy the ship transporting the chimpanzees. Everything seems to fall apart everywhere, and human civilization apparently collapses. The leader of the terraforming and uplifting project is left on a spaceship orbiting the planet as an uploaded computer AI, which doesn’t always work perfectly.

As there are no chimpanzees on the planet (I wonder why the chimps were not directly infected with the virus?), the virus finds a new host – a species of spiders. Other lower life forms are also affected, but not as much. Only ants manage to threaten the spiders' rise to the dominant species on the planet, but the spiders manage to transform the ants into a multipurpose workforce and eventually biological computers.

At the same time, remnants of humanity are seeking a new home, as Earth has become inhabitable after a series of ecocatastrophes. They have been living on a generation ship for generations, carrying a cargo with thousands of people in bio-sleep chambers. After a foray into a terraforming effort fails, they return to the spider’s planet ready to take over it, as the survival of humanity is in question.

The book was pretty good, especially the spider parts. The human parts were very dull, much less interesting and human characters were more irritating than the spiders were. The evolution of spiders and their technology was fascinating, and the tech they created was interestingly different and more organic than human technology. The book had a real end but left a lot of room for continuing the story, and apparently, there are sequels. At some point, I will read them also.

Irritating small errors: In the future, space-faring humans have apparently reverted to analog signals, as their video and audio transmissions have static; digital transmissions should not contain it.
