Shadows of Self (The Mistborn Saga #5) by Brandon Sanderson

The second part in a series that happens in the world of Mistborn centuries later. The first part was more of an introduction, where it was shown that the concept of the alomancy (using metals to achieve magical abilities) still worked. The characters of the first trilogy were mostly the stuff of legends. Now, in the second part, we learn that that isn’t entirely so, that some of the mythical beings are still there – which should not really be a surprise as Kandra (beings which can change their shape) are practically immortal. Also, after the events of the last trilogy, there is a literal god who is watching over things. But as there is a god, there is also “Ruin”, the counterpart, who wants to resist the works the god has done. And it might be that Ruin isn’t 100 percent wrong, and the god is starting to realize it. But the methods representative of those Ruin uses aren’t really nice as they involve mass murder - the methods of the god of the realm aren't too nice either, but at least he doesn't kill several people at one time.  A pretty good “detective” story about a world at the edge of the industrial revolution where magical powers really exist. It is a well-told book with interesting characters, better than the earlier one.
