Alan Bradley: Nokisen tomumajan arvoitus (As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust, Flavia de Luce #7)

Seuraava kirja sarjassa, joka kertoo (lähes) teini-ikäisen etsivän Flavia de Lucen seikkailuista. Flavia lähetetään Kanadaan sisäoppilaitokseen, samaan, jossa hänen vakoilijana toiminut äitinsä oli opiskellut, jatko-opintoja varten. Jatko-opinnot eivät ole vain akateemisia, vaan koulussa vaikuttaa toimivan salaseura, jossa myös Flavian äiti aikanaan toimi ja jossa ainakin osa opettajista tuntuu myös olevan mukana. Koulu näyttää päältäpäin tiukahkolta uskonnollissävytteiseltä ”normaalilta” sisäoppilaitokselta, mutta sen taustalla saattaa olla jotain muuta. Flavia ei tosin kunnolla tähän kaikkeen edes pääse sisälle, sillä heti hänen ensimmäisenä yönään koulussa hänen huoneensa savupiipun sisältä putoaa alas lippuun kääritty ruumis. Kuka tämä oikein on? Onko hän joku koulun oppilaista, joita huhutaan kadonneen vuosien kuluessa? 

Kevyehkö kirja, joka ei mielestäni lopulta ollut aikaisemmin lukemieni sarjan osien tasoa. Alkupuoli on paras osa kirjaa. Idea mahdollisesta vakoilijakoulusta jäi lopulta aika paljon käyttämättä ja selvitettävänä oleva murhakaan ei ollut kovin kiinnostava ja sen salaisuus oli aika teennäinen, epäuskottava ja sekava. Ja vieläpä kirjan lopuksi Flavia lähtee pois koulusta aika kevyen tuntuisilla perusteilla. Koulu olisi tarjonnut varsin kiinnostavan tapahtumapaikan tarinoille jatkossa. Flavia itsekin on jotenkin ponnettomampi kuin aikaisemmin. Kirja jäi pieneksi pettymykseksi. 

The next book in the series tells about the adventures of the (almost) teenage detective Flavia de Luce. Flavia is sent to a boarding school in Canada, the same school where her mother, who worked as a spy, had attended for further studies. These studies are not only academic, but there seems to be a secret society operating at the school, in which Flavia's mother also worked in her time, and in which at least some of the teachers also seem to be involved. The school appears a strict, religious-looking "normal" boarding school from the outside, but there may be something else going on behind the scenes. However, Flavia doesn't even get to examine all of this, because on her first night at the school, a body wrapped in a flag falls down the chimney of her room. Who is this? Is it one of the school students who are rumored to have gone missing over the years?

A light-hearted book which, in my opinion, was not ultimately at the same level as the previous parts of the series I have read. The first part is the best part of the book. The idea of a possible spy school was left largely undeveloped, and the murder to be solved was not very interesting either. Its secret was quite artificial, unbelievable and confusing. And even at the end of the book, Flavia leaves the school on quite flimsy grounds. The school would have offered a very interesting setting for future stories. Flavia herself is also somehow more lackluster than before. The book was a bit of a disappointment.
