Heaven's River (Bobiverse #4) by Dennis E. Taylor

The newest installment in the Bobiverse series. I didn’t even know there was one until I noticed it more or less by accident. The Bobiverse has evolved and the new “Bobs” are growing more and more different than the original and with different ideas about what they should do. One faction, “Starfleet,” wants Bobs to observe a “prime directive” and not to have anything to do with any biological life at all. At the same time, the “original” Bob is trying to find Bender, who started an exploration run and hasn’t been heard from for more than a century. On that journey he discovers a giant structure in space that is settled by otter-like intelligent creatures. They seem to be living a pre-industrial life in a megastructure that consists of a loop that is about a billion miles long. And Bender appears to be somewhere on the structure, but where? A search party is obviously needed. A lot of the book takes place on the structure, where the main characters inhabit android otter bodies by telepresence.

Nowhere as good as the previous parts of the series, but an entertaining book nevertheless. The diversification of the Bobs didn’t feel “right” even though there was an in-universe explanation - or at least speculation - for that. Some tightening, especially from running around as an otter, might have made the book better and more structured.
