Points of Impact (Frontlines #6) by Marko Kloos
The latest part of a series where Earth forces battle against giant almost unstoppable alien creatures. This time Earth has developed new and more powerful ships that should be able to beat the giant alien “seedships”. The ships are put to the test when the news arrives that the frozen colony world of New Svalbard is being attacked. The world is already familiar with the hero, Andrew Grayson, from the events in the third book.
The overall plot didn’t advance at all in this part. In the first half of the book very little happened, mostly some bonding with the main character and his wife, which was pretty much a rerun from several earlier installments of the series. And I really, really wonder why nothing is learned from the invaders - apparently no one knows anything about their biology, society or background. There have been a lot of carcasses for study after all, and there should have been ample opportunities to send recording spy drones or something similar to their nests. Those details would be vastly more interesting than one more battle scene. Also, there were some stupid errors in tactic - if the monsters have no weapons and only use their formidable strength and agility in the battle, why fly a battle “helicopter” anywhere even near their reach? The weapons described have improved a bit, but still, there is an effective range for kinetic weapons in space, at least when the plot demands it. The worst part of the series so far.
